SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El is joining forces with The Making Autistic Strides Foundation to raise awareness and to promote our fabulous religious school program.
Our integrated second grade religious school class is geared towards teaching Jewish customs, holidays, and traditions. Through interactive projects, stories and music and art activities, we have embarked on the journey of understanding our Jewish culture. Our class has 18 students. It's uniqueness, is that 4 of our students have Autism. Using differentiated instruction, visually enhanced materials, and a variety of stimulating activities, we have allowed for all learners to access the Jewish curriculum and culture. We are fortunate enough to not only have a teacher but also very dedicated volunteers who help assist during the instructional day. Marci Kaplowitz is the lead teacher. She received an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Florida. She currently teaching in a preschool for children with Autism, where she is the lead teacher.
Making Autistic Strides is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to Raising Autism Awareness across the nation. They are a parent run South Florida based charity established in 2009. Their goals is to empower and inspire parents to participate in their children's development and educational successes. The hope is that parents will choose The Making Autistic Strides Foundation as an ongoing source to get and share information, advice, and stories and find answers to their parenting and intervention needs. It is our mission to become knowledgeable about every aspect of Autism and to share that knowledge with you, working the puzzle together, spreading awareness with the hopes of helping other children and families in need. In addition to raising awareness we hope that through our fundraisers and the foundation we will not only be able to retain our fabulous program but to expand it into other areas of the Temple.
